SCHOOL COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Mrs. Katie Heger is no stranger to the Underwood School and community. Katie has been involved in the school and community for over 20 years. She, her husband Steven, and 5 children live in Underwood. In her freetime,  Mrs. Heger enjoys being outside, drinking coffee, cooking, reading, watching her children participate in activities, and traveling!

The School Counselor’s role has several aspects:

In the elementary grades, focus is on nurturing social skills and emotional resilience through engaging classroom activities and individual counseling sessions. The main goal is to instill a strong foundation of empathy and self-awareness in young learners.

As students advance to middle school, so do the complexities of adolescence. Guidance on navigating peer relationships, exploring career interests, and preparing for high school is provided. The counselor’s office becomes a trusted space where students can openly discuss their goals and concerns.

In high school, a school counselor assists with course selection, scholarship announcements, college applications, vocational training, and job readiness while also offering support for any personal issues that arise. Collaboration with teachers, parents, and community organizations ensures a holistic approach to student support, making her an integral part of each student's journey.

The Underwood School Counselor also oversees 504 student support plans and includes the Homeless and Foster Care Liaison and Behavioral Health Coordinator positions.
